About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) on the UW Health Inpatient Acute Care General Surgery unit at University Hospital in Madison, WI. The role is 90% FTE, involving day/evening shifts with required every other weekend and holiday rotations, with hours based on departmental operational needs. The RN will join a team caring for high acuity general care level patients on a 28-bed unit, providing post-operative care for complex abdominal surgeries (esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, including Whipple procedures). Responsibilities include managing surgical drains, nasogastric tube placement, administering enteral nutrition, complex wound care with wound vacs, epidural and PCA pain pump management, and stoma care. The role involves collaboration with multiple surgical services and specialty certified Wound and Ostomy RNs. The unit fosters professional development through continuing education, support for professional certifications, and mentorship, and encourages involvement in evidence-based therapies, research studies, quality improvement initiatives, and practice change. Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of WI or holds a license issued by a jurisdiction that has adopted the nurse licensure compact
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification
  • Six (6) months nursing experience or current participant in UW Health’s Nurse Residency Program with successful completion of the Nurse Residency Orientation on unit/similar unit (for Inpatient Units and Central Float (Adult & Pediatric), Venous Access Team (VAT), Radiology, Hemodialysis, Cardiovascular Laboratory)
  • Two (2) years of nursing experience (for eICU)

Responsibilities

  • Care for high acuity general care level patients on the 28 bed Acute Care General Surgery unit
  • Provide post-operative care to patients undergoing complex abdominal surgeries involving the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas (Whipple procedure), gallbladder, and bile ducts
  • Provide post-operative surgical care for acutely ill patients
  • Manage surgical drains
  • Perform nasogastric tube placement
  • Administer enteral nutrition
  • Perform complex wound care with use of wound vacs
  • Manage epidural and PCA pain pump management
  • Perform stoma care
  • Collaborate with multiple surgical services including general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, emergency surgery, and surgical oncology as well as specialty certified Wound and Ostomy RNs
  • Be involved in cutting edge, evidence-based therapies and research studies to improve patient outcomes
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and lead practice change
