About The Position

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation is a nationally recognized leader in inpatient rehabilitation, providing hospital-level care for patients with complex medical and neurological needs. They are currently hiring Registered Nurses (RNs) for their Inpatient Acute Care Units, which include Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Medically Complex (Cardiac/Oncology), Pediatrics Unit, Intensive Medical Rehab Unit (Critical Care), and 6th Floor Ortho Trauma/Amputee Unit. These units offer intensive rehabilitation and hospital-level nursing care, allowing RNs to manage high-acuity patients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and significantly contribute to patient recovery and independence. The role involves being a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, coordinating, directing, delegating, and providing patient-centered care with compassion and courtesy. A primary focus of rehabilitation nursing is patient and family education, which is crucial for helping patients gain independence, apply adaptation strategies, and return home. The position is full-time with a rotating schedule of 6 weeks on days and 6 weeks on nights, totaling 36 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Associate's degree in nursing is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • All newly hired staff will be required to become a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) by their 3rd anniversary with Mary Free Bed.

  • Must be competent with computer systems for the purpose of documenting patient care.
  • Must be able to understand and follow department policies related to employee safety (due to possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens and hazardous materials).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse is preferred and will be encouraged for all MFB RNs.
  • Previous experience as a RN, especially in a rehabilitation or acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.
  • Responsible for all nursing care provided to patients at Mary Free Bed.
  • Develop and/or follow a patient-centered plan of care that aligns with the priorities and plans developed by the attending physician and other disciplines through careful assessment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and critical thinking.
  • Coordinate care for non-licensed staff through delegation and follow-up, to assure that all care provided follows departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in performance improvement through identification of ways to improve care, reporting unexpected events or medical errors, and reporting “near misses”.
  • Participate in data collection and documentation audits to assist the Nursing Department with quality improvement measures, as requested.
  • Promote safety for all patients served by following all applicable department policies and procedures.
  • Understand and contribute to the initiatives that are in place to improve the safety of the patients served.
  • Identify and report unexpected events and near misses without the fear of reprisal or retaliation.
  • Communicate threats to patient safety or opportunities for improvement with a member of the Nursing Leadership Team in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service standards and behaviors, while interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Deal discreetly and sensitively with confidential information.
  • Perform customer service recovery with patients and families’ members, as needed.
  • Take active steps to recognize unique cultural and religious needs of patients and families and integrate these diverse needs into a patient-specific plan of care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with admitting and consulting physicians.
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues from other disciplines.

  • Assist with employee selection and the orientation process for new team members, as requested.
  • Present interview questions and feedback professionally and tactfully, and maintain confidentiality of interview information.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to provide a comprehensive orientation for new team members as a preceptor.
  • Ensure the Nursing Care Assistant assigned to the RN, and who is serving as a preceptor, provides a thorough and accurate orientation for the new team member.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to provide a valuable clinical rotation for RN students, as assigned.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures related to payroll practices, patient chargeable items and other opportunities to provide high-value nursing care at a reasonable price.
  • Share opportunities for cost savings and efficiency with the appropriate member of the Nursing Leadership Team.
  • Consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers.
  • Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions.
  • Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
