About The Position

SWVMHI in Marion, VA (Smyth County) is recruiting a 12-hour PM Shift Registered Nurse II to join its dedicated and talented Nursing Service Team on our Geriatric Unit. This position involves working 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. shifts, including at least every other weekend. The role requires demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary treatment team, implement effective Nursing Care Plans, and provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric populations. Responsibilities include administering medications, performing infection prevention and control practices, maintaining medical record documentation, managing conflict and crises, and working in a secure and locked environment with individuals experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness, ID/DD, and/or forensic/legal involvement. The position also requires the ability to adhere to scheduling requirements, work overtime in staffing emergencies, and effectively inspire and lead others. Physical requirements include repetitious walking/standing, bending, lifting, and reaching overhead.

Requirements

  • Must be a Licensed Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or applicant status.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with successful outcomes with an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement an effective Nursing Care Plan as part of an integrated interdisciplinary Comprehensive Treatment Plan.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of professional registered nursing.
  • Ability to administer medications, assess effectiveness and provide education to client and/or family safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities.
  • Demonstrate oral, written, and electronic skills to adequately communicate with others including client, family, and other customers.
  • Demonstrate ability to complete medical record documentation, and “hand-off” information satisfactorily to other caregivers.
  • Demonstrate successful interventions to manage conflict including crises and aggressive behavior, motivate others, work effectively in a constantly changing environment, and able to tolerate emotional stress.
  • Computer skills to perform document development, learning tools, and electronic communication.
  • Ability to hear and see to assess and respond to safety concerns.
  • Ability to adhere to scheduling requirements as described by policy and able to work overtime in a staffing emergency.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively inspire and lead others toward facility goals.
  • Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness, ID/DD, and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
  • Repetitious walking and/or standing; bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and/or escort individuals, and to perform or assist in activities of daily living.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience with knowledge of performance management and evaluation processes.
  • Experience working with individuals with mental illness, forensic, geriatric, and/or substance abuse issues.
  • Supervisory experience and competency in Charge Nurse role.
  • Computer skills, including use of electronic health record.
