About The Position

This position orients to the planning, coordination, and provision of nursing care to patients on the medical/surgical unit. It focuses on the care of age-related physiological, emotional, and cognitive needs of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. This includes, but is not limited to, care planning, vital signs, medication dosages, physiological changes, and psychosocial needs. The role also involves supervising and delegating care responsibilities to ancillary personnel commensurate with their scope of practice. This position is represented by CNA.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree (A.S.) or equivalent
  • Current RN license in state of practice
  • Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice
  • AHA-BLS or ARC-BLS certification

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations.
  • Competent in all routine nursing skills including: medication administration, intravenous therapy including blood products, care & maintenance of indwelling catheters & drains, and safe use of medical equipment such as glucose meters, IV pumps and PCA machines.
  • Provides for age-related physiological, emotional and cognitive needs of adolescent, adult, geriatric, and those with hearing, learning and physical disabilities.
  • Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Competent in epidural management, care of acute post-op wounds, sterile technique, and assessment of vascular patency.
  • Educates patients and/or their families regarding care using age-appropriate teaching methods.
  • Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on competency and scope of practice.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of care performed.
  • Completes legible, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care provided.
  • Performs necessary unit-specific safety & quality control checks.
  • Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve care, services, and unit operation.
  • Efficiently uses downtime for job-related or unit-specific work.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
