The General Surgery department is comprised of the subspecialties of general surgery, surgical oncology, breast surgery, and colorectal surgery. The duties of this role include supporting a provider's practice, providing direct patient care and education, reviewing and responding to patient questions and concerns, assisting with minor procedures, and care coordination. This role answers patient inquiries over the telephone, assessing the severity of the patient's symptoms and medical needs according to triage algorithms. The RN guides the patient to the appropriate level of care and schedules patient appointments over the phone with appropriate healthcare providers/facilities/physicians. The RN documents information provided to patients during triage in health record systems and records patients' health conditions for follow-up patient care. The RN also maintains and develops triage protocols and ensures patients' healthcare information is updated on time. The role answers inquiries through multiple variations of technology, depending on the department, and educates patients based on calls that come in.
