The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is an advanced unit-based registered nurse responsible for providing timely, non-judgmental, and compassionate care to patients who have experienced injury through intentional and unintentional acts of violence and victimization, as well as individuals considered suspects or perpetrators of crime. This role involves conducting forensic medical assessments, documenting injuries, collecting and preserving forensic evidence while maintaining chain of custody, and providing psychological support and referrals. The FNE often testifies in court as an expert witness. This position requires travel to other jurisdictions and facilities, including medical facilities, courts, and detention centers. The FNE utilizes the nursing process and current clinical knowledge to provide professional nursing care within the Riverside Health System, focusing on patient, family, nurse, and healthcare delivery teams. The role emphasizes advanced knowledge in forensic nursing to assess medicolegal needs, collaborate with health team members, coordinate patient care, anticipate outcomes, and set criteria for quality patient care. The FNE also participates in professional development, patient/staff/community education, quality assessment, and ethical/legal functioning, serving as a resource, preceptor, and mentor.
