About The Position

Provides nursing care to Life Flight patients, adhering to Act 37 standards and protocols. This role involves providing care from initial contact until patient is relinquished to the accepting medical facility, maintaining thorough electronic medical record documentation, and practicing within the defined scope of practice. The position requires maintaining competency, communicating educational needs, and staying knowledgeable about equipment and supplies. The RN will also maintain the medical interior of aircraft and ground ambulances, ensure adequate inventory, and keep the base environment clean and orderly. Functions as a flight crew member, assisting the pilot as needed, and participating in pre-mission and post-mission activities. Serves as a transport resource for specialty teams like ECMO and NICU, and complies with safety standards during all phases of flight. Acts as a role model, teacher, and clinical resource to external healthcare professionals, and may serve as a preceptor for new employees and students. Completes safety-related incident reports and participates in patient safety education. Provides input for performance appraisals of care delivery team members and problem-solves equipment issues. The work environment involves being in and around aircraft, with potential exposure to infectious diseases, chemical toxins, non-conventional motion, noise, vibration, jet fumes, and extreme temperatures. Physical demands include the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and employees must not exceed 250 lbs in weight in flight gear. Travel may be required.

Requirements

• Graduate from Specialty Training Program-Nursing (Required)
• Minimum of 3 years-Related work experience (Required)
• Basic Life Support Certification - Default Issuing Body
• Licensed Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - RN_State of Pennsylvania
• Three years of critical care nursing experience.
• Employee may not exceed 250 lbs in weight in flight gear.

Nice To Haves

• One of the following specialty certifications required upon hire: CCRN- Critical Care RN, CEN Certified Emergency Nurse Specialization, CFRN Certified Flight RN, CTRN- Certified Transport RN Specialization
• CFRN required within one year of orientation.
• Certified Flight Registered Nurse within one year - Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program within one year of hire - Neonatal Resuscitation Program
• Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse - Default Issuing Body
• S.T.A.B.L.E. Certified within one year - The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program

Responsibilities

• Provides nursing care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to accepting medical facility.
• Maintains thorough patient care documentation in the Electronic Medical Record.
• Practices nursing within their scope of practice as defined by the state, BEMS (act 37) and Geisinger, maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
• Communicates educational needs to the Life Flight clinical leadership team, Chief Flight Nurse, or Medical Director.
• Maintains programs monthly continuing education requirements.
• Remains knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Life Flight.
• Maintains medical interior of Life Flight aircraft and ground ambulances.
• Assures adequate inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Assures a clean and orderly environment at assigned Life Flight base.
• Functions as a flight crew member.
• Assists the pilot when needed, including attending pre-mission briefings and mission debriefings and completing necessary documentation.
• Serves as a transport resource as applicable on specialty team transports (ECMO and NICU).
• Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical crew members, patient, and equipment during all phases of flight.
• Serves as a role model, teacher, and clinical resource to preferring hospital, EMS, and other health care professionals.
• Acts as preceptor and participates in orientation of new employees and students as assigned.
• Completes reports when applicable for all safety related incidents.
• Participates in required patient safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational safety.
• Provides input to the clinical management team for performance appraisals of care delivery team members.
• Problem solves, troubleshoots and takes corrective measures in care and handling of equipment.
