The RN - Emergency Department position requires maintaining an in-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards, and techniques, applying this knowledge in accordance with Sky Lakes policies and procedures, and within the laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon. The role involves overall responsibility for patient care in the ED, functioning as a care manager/caregiver by assessing patient conditions and needs, developing care plans with defined outcomes, and implementing nursing actions to meet patients' physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual needs. The position promotes healing by maintaining a peaceful, orderly, and clean environment. Responsibilities include assigning and supervising patient care tasks to team members, evaluating and redirecting care and staff assignments based on patient needs and staffing activity, identifying and communicating unit staffing needs according to the Nursing Department staffing matrix, patient acuity, and professional judgment, and reporting inadequate staffing to management. The role also involves evaluating patient progress, ensuring effective and efficient nursing care, carrying out the medical regime as prescribed by the physician in collaboration with other disciplines, and maintaining quality and efficiency standards while making recommendations for improvements. Additionally, the position participates in facilitating patients' and families' learning for discharge preparation, reinforces continued health care through teaching and referrals, maintains awareness of legal aspects of nursing and documentation within the Registered Nurse's scope of practice, and reports performance issues or misconduct by supervised non-RNs to Nursing Management. Ongoing education to hospital staff regarding patient care is provided through in-services and individual orientation. Attending departmental and other meetings as requested by the supervisor is also required. A thorough knowledge and competency of emergency nursing principles, practice, protocols, and procedures are essential, with application in accordance with Sky Lakes Emergency Department Standards of Care. The role may involve assuming department-specific charge nurse responsibilities when accepting the charge nurse differential.
