About The Position

Universal Health Services (UHS) is a leading healthcare provider with a strong presence in acute care and behavioral health services. Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC), a 100-bed psychiatric hospital, offers specialized services for adults facing acute psychiatric and substance abuse challenges. VBPC is seeking an Intake Clinician-RN to join their team, responsible for providing telephonic or face-to-face mental health crisis triage, assessment, intervention, and disposition. This role involves managing crisis line calls, gathering necessary information, providing appropriate interventions or referrals, and scheduling follow-up assessments as needed. The candidate will also be responsible for referring individuals to appropriate external resources when UHS systems are not suitable.

Requirements

  • Required licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Must possess knowledge of current psychiatric diagnoses and treatment terminology; completed biopsychosocial patient assessments, including conducting formal mental status evaluation and patient medical history; community resources; third party payers, including managed care companies to develop and clinically appropriate crisis intervention and disposition plan; basic typing and computer literacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a degree and one or more years of direct or related mental health counseling experience.
  • Prefer mental health crisis counseling experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides telephonic or face-to-face mental health crisis triage, assessment, intervention and disposition at Assessment and Referral Centers or "on-site" at general hospital emergency room, therapist's or physician's office.
  • Answers the telephone crisis line and obtains all pertinent demographic, clinical, marketing and third party information to determine the appropriateness of face-to-face telephonic assessment and clinical disposition of the caller; seeks supervision when caller requests information/data unfamiliar to counselor.
  • Provides clinically appropriate resolution to those calls evaluated as information only.
  • Provides clinically appropriate telephonic disposition to those clients whose calls are evaluated as routine; referring to outpatient care as appropriate.
  • Schedules face-to-face clinical assessments within twenty-four (24) hours if the call is evaluated as urgent or emergent.
  • Refers calls not appropriate for care within the UHS systems matrix to other clinically appropriate providers and/or community resources.
