The CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) is a 33-bed, high-acuity critical care unit providing specialized care for patients undergoing complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular procedures. The unit cares for some of the most critically ill patients, requiring advanced monitoring and life-sustaining therapies. The CVICU manages heart and lung transplant recipients, complex valve replacements and repairs, post-operative complex vascular surgery patients, advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock, and patients requiring advanced mechanical circulatory and organ support. Nurses in the CVICU care for patients supported with LVADs, RVADs, Impella devices, Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), ECMO, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Additional responsibilities include management of mechanical ventilation, multiple vasoactive and inotropic infusions, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, chest tubes, temporary pacing, and targeted temperature management. The targeted nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:2, reflecting the high level of acuity and complexity. The CVICU is an AACN Beacon Award–recognized unit and a designated ELSO Gold Center of Excellence, highlighting a commitment to exceptional patient outcomes, nursing excellence, and evidence-based, interdisciplinary care. The unit offers exposure to transplant medicine, advanced ECMO management, and cutting-edge cardiovascular critical care.
