About The Position

A registered professional nurse who is responsible for direct and indirect coordination and management of patients who present to Erlanger Baroness ED requiring psychiatric care and behavior management. Responsible for assigned shift and formulate a plan and execute with department leadership. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate for the age and diagnosis of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth, development, and aging over the life span. The individual must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirement relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed. The employee is responsible for the coordination and management of patients who present to the Erlanger Baroness ED requiring psychiatric care and behavior management. From a patient care perspective, the individual will perform nursing assessments and acute behavioral management as required. Provide detailed information about behavioral health management plans and any special considerations to the ED team. Assist with escalating patients with primary or secondary psychiatric conditions. Administer emergency medication for aggression. Assist/direct care when indicated for 4 point restraints and/or seclusion and obtain orders as needed from the provider. Ensure all behavioral health protocols and policies are consistently followed as ordered. Ensure CONs are properly managed and always accompany those patients. Assist patients with communication/contacts with family as needed. The employee will be a primary responder to BERT alerts. In order to provide the aforementioned care, the employee will need to work closely with the ED staff and physicians, security and officers to coordinate care, symptom management and evolving treatment and discharge plans to address any specific behavioral needs. The employee will regularly update the ED team on treatment progress and level of care needs as well as sitter needs. They will provide clear instructions for behavioral care and any changes in patient management.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Clinical experience required.
  • Evidence of leadership abilities required.
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills.
  • Knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current trends and new developments.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing; and applicable knowledge of those areas requiring special education.
  • 1 year or more of Psychiatry experience.
  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee.
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and to be maintained going forward.
  • ACLS certified required.
  • Unit specific approved certification.
  • Certified training as required by area of practice.
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate for the age and diagnosis of the patients served.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth, development, and aging over the life span.
  • Ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirement relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in recruitment, retention, and onboarding of new staff.
  • Identify and monitor staff to develop as Clinical Staff Leaders.
  • Facilitate open communication with ancillary departments and medical staff.
  • Communicate areas of concern to leadership and identify solutions.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately based on staff skill level.
  • Coach and counsel staff to enhance performance.
  • Conduct performance reviews in collaboration with Department management.
  • Collaborate with Director/Manager to facilitate monthly staff meetings.
  • Facilitate orientation opportunities and experiences for new staff.
  • Identify education opportunities for self and staff.
  • Assist in staff development by reviewing care and offering constructive feedback.
  • Manage productivity by flexing staffing based on census and acuity.
  • Analyze adequate staffing for the shift and next 24 hours.
  • Monitor supply costs to maintain budget.
  • Adhere to established PAR levels.
  • Responsible for timely patient placement according to department matrix.
  • Complete Kronos per guidelines.
  • Update daily schedule timely to reflect actual staffing.
  • Monitor time and attendance and take corrective action.
  • Communicate effectively with Physicians and service lines.
  • Assist with community outreach programs and opportunities.
  • Demonstrate mastery of patient care, including assessment, treatment, care planning, patient education, and evidence-based practice.
  • Lead by example of good work habits and effective professional relationships.
