As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients. This role involves following policies and procedures, applying scientific knowledge to nursing practice, and performing comprehensive assessments and screenings upon patient encounter via telephone or in clinic. The RN interprets assessment information to formulate nursing diagnoses, maintains patient problem, medication, and allergy lists, and administers medications and completes re-assessments as indicated. Patient care procedures are performed correctly per policy, and tasks are delegated based on others’ scope of practice and competency. The RN acts as a patient advocate, provides patient and family education as needed, and ensures complete and correct documentation on all encounters. Equipment maintenance, effective communication with all members of the healthcare team (including patient and family), and efficient time management are also key aspects of the role. The position requires adherence to regulatory agency requirements such as National Patient Safety Goals, HIPAA, OSHA, and JCAHO standards, as well as participation in quality measures and professional development activities. Specific duties include assessing a patient’s knowledge base/understanding of their diagnostic procedure, planning the course of testing/treatment in coordination with a physician, assisting with cardiac diagnostic procedures in the Non-Invasive Cardiology Lab, and educating patients/families about procedures and treatment according to individual needs.
