The RN Clinical Nurse Practice Specialist provides clinical nursing expertise in their area of nursing specialty, possessing advanced nursing skills. They assess and recommend education needs for role development, offer staff support and guidance on patient care plans, and identify professional practice needs by analyzing data. This role enhances process improvement by identifying opportunities, leading quality initiatives, and implementing change. The specialist serves as a resource for evidence-based, cost-effective, safe clinical nursing practices and regulatory standards, evaluating new evidence and research for application to practice. They establish standards of practice using evidence-based information to achieve nurse-sensitive indicator outcomes and evaluate the results of nursing practice changes. Additionally, they lead the integration, management, and evaluation of technology and products to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and health outcomes. The role involves partnering in the development of evidence-based policies, procedures, and protocols, creating and implementing plans for sustainable change at the clinical unit level, and actively participating in Shared Decision-Making Councils. In education, they consult with leadership and educators to establish annual competencies and educational needs. They partner with peers to create and implement educational programs, develop and provide nursing education in various formats, and respond to community learning needs. They share responsibility for developing, implementing, and evaluating learning and development programs and teaching methodologies, and participate in the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of Transition to Practice programs. Collaboration with academic nursing partners to support nursing student integration is also key. In leadership and mentorship, the specialist acts as an influential leader in interprofessional learning, professional growth, and practice change, using effective strategies to encourage the adoption of evidence-based practices. They demonstrate critical thinking and emotional intelligence, mentor clinical nurse/staff nurse educators, and foster a healthy work environment through coaching and advanced communication. The role involves identifying and participating in nursing research projects, mentoring others in research, and participating in professional nursing organizations to disseminate knowledge and advocate for nurses. They advance nursing practice through professional organizations, publications, and dissemination of best practices, creating an accountable nursing care environment that stimulates continuous learning and reflective practice. They advocate for nurses to practice to the full extent of their role.
