The RN Clinical Nurse Practice Specialist provides clinical nursing expertise and advanced nursing skills in their area of specialty. They assess and recommend education needs for role development, offer staff support and guidance in patient care planning, and identify professional practice needs by analyzing data to evaluate issues, trends, and outcomes. This role enhances process improvement by identifying opportunities, leading quality initiatives, and implementing change. The specialist serves as a source of information on the latest evidence-based, cost-effective, safe clinical nursing practices and regulatory standards, evaluating new evidence and research for potential application to clinical practice. They identify standards of practice using evidence-based information to achieve outcomes for nurse-sensitive indicators and evaluate the outcomes of nursing practice changes. Additionally, they lead the integration, management, and evaluation of technology and products to promote safety, quality, efficiency, and optimal health outcomes, and partner in the development of evidence-based policies, procedures, and protocols, creating and implementing plans for sustainable change. Active participation in Shared Decision-Making Councils is also a key aspect of this role. In terms of education, the specialist consults with Nursing Leadership, Clinical Nurse Educators, Department Based Educators, and other system teams to establish annual competencies/skill days and other educational needs. They partner with peers and colleagues on creating and implementing programs such as just-in-time education, presentations, and practical skills in clinical or simulation settings, utilizing evidence-based practice and adult learning theory. The role involves developing and providing nursing education in various venues and methods, responding to community learning needs, and employing educational strategies to promote health and prevent illness. They share responsibility for developing, implementing, and evaluating learning and development programs and teaching methodologies to improve organizational outcomes. Participation in the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of Transition to Practice programs for nurses at all levels is expected, as is collaboration with academic nursing partners to support the integration of nursing students into the practice environment. In leadership and mentorship, the specialist serves as an influential leader in interprofessional learning, professional growth, and practice change, using effective strategies to encourage the adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations. They demonstrate critical thinking and emotional intelligence in decision-making, supporting a culture of innovation and clinical excellence. The role includes mentoring and coaching clinical nurse/staff nurse educators, fostering a healthy work environment, and building effective teams through coaching and advanced communication skills. Identifying and participating in evidence-based and nursing research projects, and mentoring others in these projects, is also part of the role. They participate in professional nursing organizations to contribute to the flow of new nursing knowledge and advocate for nurses. Advancing nursing practice through participation in professional organizations, publications, and dissemination of best practices is encouraged. The specialist creates an accountable nursing care environment that stimulates continuous self-learning, reflective practice, and a sense of ownership, and advocates for nurses to practice to the full extent of their role.
