The Clinical Decision Unit holds patients whose medical conditions require specific, clinically defined hospital-based services, including short-term treatments, assessments, and reassessments. Staff periodically monitor and evaluate patients to determine whether they can be discharged or need inpatient admission. Expected stays are 8–48 hours, so admission, transfer, and discharge activity is high and the unit is fast-paced. The clinical area has a pace similar to the Emergency Room, with diagnostic workups and care needs in a telemetry setting. The nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, educates, and documents patient care in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing practice standards. The role uses specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills to assess data, plan care, and provide and evaluate care that supports a safe discharge. The position is 36 hours per week, with a 7 a.m. start and rotating weekends and holidays. The role is covered by a collective bargaining agreement; compensation is governed by that agreement. Beth Israel Lahey Health requires staff to be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
