For more information on UofL Health, go to www.uoflhealth.org. Position Summary and Purpose The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering nursing care to the Patient in the C.V. Laboratory. The R.N. administers medications, observes for complication and intervenes when emergencies occur. The R.N. will scrub to assist the Physician during all procedures (except PTCA) and will run the Code 300. This document defines major job responsibilities and performance expectations and serves as a tool for evaluation performance. However, it is not intended to be all inclusive as other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Kentucky.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • A minimum of two years of Cardiovascular Laboratory experience or two years of critical care experience (required).
  • Strong customer service skills- able to demonstrate patience and understanding, ensure customer satisfaction, and resolve customer complaints.
  • Superior organization skills- manages time effectively, keeps tasks appropriately prioritized, able to pay extreme attention to detail for long periods of time.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills- responsive, informs constituents of process, pleasant to work with, educates and provides timely, accurate information; can build effective, strong working relationships others through trust, communication, and credibility.
  • Skilled at remaining calm during periods of stress.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines, and organizational policies.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates accurate utilization of the new CERNER platform (E.H.R.) as evidenced by less than 3 omissions of mandatory charting requirements within a 12 month period.
  • Regularly check email for corporate and department communications.
  • Displays knowledge and complies with the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Implements an age-appropriate plan of care in conjunction with the health care team per Scope of Service.
  • Attends all UofL Health required educational programs as well as all Learn (KNOW) Modules
  • Demonstrates knowledge of drug therapy and documents according to best practice.
  • Administers medications and IV fluids with 100% accuracy as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient or peer complaint.
  • Uses IV book to reference unfamiliar drugs before administering so that side effects and complications are prevented or reduced as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient, or peer complaint.
  • Checks patency of IV site(s) so that drugs and fluids are successfully infused as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient, or peer complaint.
  • Completes nursing chart forms completely with accurate and pertinent information to record patient’s condition and progress as demonstrated by the appropriate documentation.
  • Checks narcotics according to policy and documents wastage 100% of the time as demonstrated by the narcotics records.
  • Supervises nursing care of the patient in the cardiovascular laboratory.
  • Assists in the general preparation of the patient before procedure including assuring that the nursing data base is on the chart as demonstrated by the nursing data base and the lack of physician or peer complaint.
  • Continually anticipates patient’s needs, observes and assesses patient closely for chest pain, E.K.G. changes and complications so that problems can be treated early as demonstrated by a lack of physician, peer, or patient complaints.
  • Exercises good judgment in making decisions, notifying physician and in implementing patient care as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaint.
  • Supervises nursing care of the patient post cardiovascular laboratory procedure.
  • Supervises care of the patient post procedure including close observation of catheter entry site, assessment of vital signs, pulses, and post cath instructions to facilitate patient’s compliance and healing of site as demonstrated by a lack of occurrence reports or physician, nursing unit, or peer complaints.
  • Acts as a liaison with patient’s family, communicates with families during or after procedure as necessary and provides emotional support as demonstrated by a lack of family, patient, physician, or peer complaints.
  • Provides nursing care of patient post catheterization/P.T.C.A. when hospital bed in not available; transports patient to hospital bed and gives report providing continuity of care as demonstrated by the smooth work flow in the lab and the lack of patient, physician, nursing unit, or peer complaints.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Cardiac Catheterization procedures and equipment.
  • Scrubs to assist the Cardiologist during procedures as needed as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaint.
  • Operates the injector accurately, with speed and without assistance 100% of the time as demonstrated by a lack of occurrence reports or physician or peer complaint.
  • Operates the imaging equipment accurately and rapidly to assist the Cardiologist to visualize cardiac anatomy as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.
  • Is familiar with 90% of the different catheter wires and balloons used in procedures as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.
  • Completes the log book accurately and completely 100% of the time as demonstrated by the completed log book and lack of physician or peer complaint
  • Contributes to the productivity and cost effectiveness of the department operation.
  • Maintains stock supplies of medications, IV fluids and tubing and charges for items used in patient care 95% of the time as demonstrated by appropriate stock levels and lack of lost charges.
  • Maintains professional demeanor during procedures so that patient care is the number one concern as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient, or peer complaints.
  • Performs duties in an organized and efficient work flow and a lack of physician or peer complaints.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule and duties so that the work is completed in a smooth and expeditious manner as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.
  • Responsible for participation in the mandatory call schedule. Completion of schedule, and scheduled cases prior to the end of the work-day as required by the Cardiovascular Laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee. Demonstrated by a smooth running call system and lack of physician or peer complaint.
