The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department offers virtually every type of cardiac surgery, providing caregivers with the opportunity to work in a highly specialized and advanced clinical environment. As an RN, you will work directly with cardiothoracic surgeons and the Cardiac Pre-Op team to help ensure patients are fully cleared and prepared for surgery while delivering an exceptional patient experience. This role serves as the final step in the pre-operative process for cardiac surgery patients. Responsibilities include reviewing patient histories, interpreting pathology reports and diagnostic results, initiating additional testing when needed, communicating pre-surgical instructions to patients, and collaborating closely with surgeons to address concerns prior to surgery. This is a highly detailed, patient-facing position that requires strong critical thinking, independent decision-making, and excellent communication skills.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing (Diploma, ADN or BSN program)
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • In areas performing moderate sedation procedures and/or cardiac stress testing, must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) Certification within six months of hire
  • One year of recent experience as an RN OR LPN, Medical Assistant and/or other unlicensed clinical healthcare experience if applicant is a current Cleveland Clinic caregiver in an ambulatory setting transferring into an RN role but remaining in the same current ambulatory Cleveland Clinic setting OR a current Cleveland Clinic caregiver in a clinical role within the same specialty area transferring into an ambulatory area

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Previous RN experience with a strong cardiac care background; CVICU experience
  • Ability to review and interpret patient reports, recognize abnormal findings, and understand pathology outside normal ranges
  • Strong clinical judgment skills with the ability to identify abnormal readings and promptly notify the surgeon when appropriate
  • Experience collaborating with all members of the patient care team throughout the pre-assessment process
  • Ability to thrive in a highly detailed and comprehensive clinical role
  • Demonstrated excellent work ethic, professionalism, and accountability
  • Nursing backgrounds include CVICU and Cardiac Stepdown units; candidates with extensive ICU and/or HVTI experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care in an ambulatory setting.
  • Assess health status, complete nursing assessments, perform telephone triage, and establish care plans.
  • Administer medication and treatments.
  • Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.
  • Notify the physician and/or Licensed Independent Provider (LIP) of abnormal findings.
  • Assist with specialized diagnostic procedures, therapeutic procedures, and specialized patient care equipment.
  • Develop, evaluate, adapt and document health education and provide it to patients and families.
  • Cover other nursing roles within the department.
  • Travel within the region to support physician clinics and surgical procedures, as needed.
