Risk Data Scientist

Flexcar•Boston, MA
•$112,000 - $155,000•Onsite

About The Position

Flexcar is seeking a Risk Data Scientist to manage model-driven approaches to credit, accident, and fraud risk. This hands-on individual contributor role owns the full lifecycle of the risk modeling stack, including building and calibrating models, managing the platforms they run on, and translating results into actionable recommendations. The role works closely with Risk, Finance, Product, and Operations teams and influences how Flexcar balances growth against risk exposure. The position spans risk modeling, platform management, and analytics. The scientist will build, refine, and maintain eligibility models and risk scoring frameworks for real-time application decisions, use AI tools, improve the Safe Driving Score and related behavioral risk models, and oversee the modeling environment and its integrations with data vendors. The role also monitors deployed model performance, identifies drift and anomalies, and contributes analysis to risk strategy decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Mathematics, Business, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a data science or quantitative modeling role with proven, quantifiable output.
  • Comfort using AI-first solutions and experience using current AI tools to drive results at high velocity.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills.
  • Comfort working with messy, real-world data.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying predictive models in a production environment.
  • Ability to work independently and own outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AI data science platforms and orchestration platforms.
  • Experience with behavioral or telematics-based risk signals.
  • Familiarity with third-party data vendors used in risk decisioning, such as bureau data, identity verification, and motor vehicle records.
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth environment where work is broad and tooling is evolving.

Responsibilities

  • Build, refine, and maintain eligibility models and risk scoring frameworks used for real-time application decisions, using AI tools.
  • Collaborate across the organization to solve problems through applied data science while managing multiple initiatives.
  • Own calibration and ongoing improvement of the Safe Driving Score and related behavioral risk models.
  • Lead feature selection, target variable development, and model validation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to set risk thresholds that balance growth with loss targets.
  • Manage the modeling environment and maintain the orchestration platform for risk models and decision workflows.
  • Monitor data quality and technical integrations with vendors covering fraud, credit, debt, public records, and driving history; work with Data Engineering to keep pipelines current and ensure models ingest appropriate inputs.
  • Partner with engineering and vendor technical teams on API changes and new data sources that could strengthen modeling.
  • Monitor deployed risk frameworks against key metrics.
  • Identify model drift, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement, and present clear recommendations.
  • Contribute ad hoc analysis supporting risk strategy decisions.

Benefits

  • Flexible PTO policy.
  • 401(k) plan with company match from day one.
