About The Position

Under the supervision of the Rising Scholar Director or designee, the Rising Scholar Student Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating support programs to incarcerated students. Demonstrates professionalism in representing the Rising Scholars program and Palo Verde College to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). The Rising Scholar Student Coordinator ensures that all programs are in alignment with outcomes for student success, collaborates with on campus resources to support program goals, serves as a resource to navigate students through the college system, and assists with program advocacy. The California Community Colleges are committed to serving students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Colleges supporting these students proudly form the Rising Scholars Network. The Rising Scholars Program at Palo Verde College looks to assist students impacted by the criminal justice system through education.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of related experience working with currently or formerly incarcerated students; in program coordination, educational support services, or related work experience.
  • Must be able to satisfy CDCR clearance guidelines.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the utilization of standard office productivity software programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), personal computers, and the internet.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Type 50 wpm.
  • Passage of the District's clerical skills test.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, ethnic, racial, age, national origin, religious, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Experience developing and implementing educational programs to meet the needs of desired special populations.
  • Knowledge of CDCR system policies, California Education Code, Title 5, Chancellor's Office Administrative Procedures, and other legal parameters that affect the polices of student success programs.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates incarcerated student support services and ensures compliance with all educational program provisions in the District's contract with CDCR.
  • Proactively responds to requests for information from incarcerated students. Implements corrective action plans when needed and ensures all required corrective actions are completed.
  • Travels to off-site locations and represents the District as incarcerated student programs liaison; Coordinates District on site visits to CDCR facilities.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements program plans and objectives; collaborates with stakeholders to enhance program goals and efficiency; coordinates delivery of services to program participants; makes sure program requirements are followed.
  • Operates a computer and other office equipment as assigned; provides clerical support including note taking, typing, filling, scanning, and digitally archiving documents and uploading meeting agenda minutes and other documents to Boardocs or appropriate systems.
  • Collaborates with required stakeholders to develop, maintain, and distribute the PVC guides and documents.
  • Develops and coordinates the delivery of Rising Scholar related workshops, seminars, and meetings.
  • Plans, develops, and implements programs and initiatives to advance student retention; participates in developing and evaluating plans and work processes to achieve annual component goals, objectives, and standards; Provides guidance to ensure seamless delivery of educational and support services to incarcerated students by all departments.
  • Maintains the District's Rising Scholars website with readily accessible resources for incarcerated students' families and/or representatives.
  • Coordinates and manages meetings, travel, and events to support and enhance incarcerated student support services and provide program updates.
  • Meets with assigned students to connect them with on campus support services and resources and ensure they are receiving the maximum aid available.
  • Serves as liaison and information resource to faculty, staff, students, CDCR personnel and other stakeholders regarding incarcerated students enrollment programs, policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Designs and produces print and electronic media to promote resources and services for students; prepares and distributes professional communications to faculty, staff, students, CDCR personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintains knowledge of all District, Federal and State guidelines, policies, regulations, and procedures applicable to assigned programs; makes recommendations to constituent groups to assure program compliance.
  • Creates and maintains a variety of confidential records and files for incarcerated students; processes student forms and correspondence; prepares data and reports required by the District, CDCR, and other agencies; participates in departmental program review.
  • Collaborates with teaching teams in planning practice placements and assignments for incarcerated students.
  • Responsible for ensuring that affiliation agreements for each institution are current. Maintains accurate database of CDCR institutions and personnel for contact and placement.
  • Reviews budgets and projections with assigned administrator; inputs requisitions and prepares reports as needed that evaluate and demonstrate program effectiveness; ensures program expenditures are within allocated budgets.
  • Required to drive to off-campus sites.
  • Participates in District, State, and Region sponsored professional development programs.
  • Maintains a friendly, supportive, collaborative atmosphere for student, staff, faculty, CDCR personnel, and the public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
