RF & Channel Emulation Systems Engineer

Qualcomm•Boulder, CO
•$116,600 - $174,800

About The Position

Qualcomm Technologies is seeking an RF & Channel Emulation Systems Engineer to join its Test Base Station (TBS) team within Cellular Technologies. The TBS team develops solutions to verify Qualcomm chipset functionality for 5G NR and LTE, with 6G in active development. The role works across software, RF/analog, and digital hardware disciplines to design and validate RF and channel emulation architectures. The engineer analyzes wireless specifications and derives system requirements, develops analog/RF architectures and calibration and compensation approaches, and evaluates features and implementation options through theoretical analysis and simulation. The role also includes lab integration and analysis of RF and channel-emulation features, communicating specifications and results to cross-disciplinary teams, and supporting implementation and commercialization with test vectors, logs, and analysis. The position works under supervision but may influence decisions beyond the immediate work group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field and at least 2 years of Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience; or a master's degree in one of those fields and at least 1 year of related experience; or a Ph.D. in one of those fields.
  • Graduate-level coursework, equivalent training, or experience in probability and random processes; digital signal processing; wireless channel models and their emulation; statistical signal analysis or signal detection and estimation; digital communications; and RF systems design.
  • Programming experience in C/C++, Matlab, and Python.
  • Ability to work on a diverse team and interact within a diverse, interdisciplinary engineering organization.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of 5G NR and LTE physical-layer specifications.
  • Knowledge of mixed-signal RF system components and methods, including ADCs, DACs, digital and analog filters, mixed-signal components, PAs, LNAs, RF calibration, and digital and analog compensation.
  • Knowledge of analog/RF impairments, including IQ mismatch, intermodulation, unwanted spurious sources, signal compression, noise figure, phase noise, and characterization.
  • Knowledge of fading channel models, including Jakes and cluster-based models, and deterministic models for high-speed train scenarios.
  • Knowledge of OFDMA and SC-FDMA.
  • Experience with RF interfaces and digital mitigation of RF distortion.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or doctorate in Electrical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the latest 3GPP and other specifications to derive requirements.
  • Translate requirements into analog/RF architecture, calibration, and analog/digital compensation.
  • Perform theoretical analysis and simulation of features, algorithms, and implementation choices.
  • Perform laboratory integration and subsequent analysis of RF and channel-emulation features.
  • Present and document specifications, designs, and results to cross-disciplinary and diverse teams, and build consensus around solutions.
  • Support feature implementation and commercialization by providing test vectors, logs, and analysis.

Benefits

  • Competitive annual discretionary bonus program.
  • Opportunity for annual RSU grants (employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for the annual bonus).
  • Competitive benefits package designed to support employees at work, at home, and at play.
