The Design Specialist I – Structural Engineering is a senior-level role responsible for creating, managing, and coordinating complex structural design models and construction documentation for building and infrastructure projects. This role leads our structural BIM/CAD efforts, ensures alignment with engineering calculations and design intent, and supports multi-disciplinary coordination. The position requires independent execution of advanced modeling tasks, close collaboration with structural engineers, and mentorship of junior designers to deliver high-quality, code-compliant structural documents.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or certification in CAD, BIM, Architecture, Engineering, or related field.
  • 4-6 years of experience in CAD/BIM design within building and infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience producing structural construction documents and coordinating with engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed structural 2D and 3D CAD/BIM models (.e.g. framing plans, foundation plans, sections, details, connection layouts) aligned with engineering calculations and specifications.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary coordination, ensuring structural systems integrate with architectural, MEP and civil models without clashes.
  • Perform and oversee control reviews of structural drawings and models, verifying accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable building codes and project standards.
  • Collaborate closely with structural engineers to translate design criteria, load paths, and calculations into accurate constructible documents.
  • Mentor junior designers on structural drafting standards, detailing best practices, and BIM/CAD workflows.
  • Generate and manage structural construction documents, including general notes, schedules (steel, rebar, concrete), and detailed sections.
  • Support development of shop drawing reviews, RFIs and design revisions by incorporating engineering changes into BIM/CAD models and plan sets.
  • Establish and maintain structural BIM standards, including model organization, naming conventions, and level of development (LOD).
  • Assist in analysis, coordination, troubleshooting and resolving complex software issues, conducting advanced modeling tasks, and identifying process improvements for BIM/CAD workflows.
  • Prepare 3D visualizations and coordination views for constructability reviews and client presentations.
