About The Position

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is seeking a Revenue Tax Auditor to conduct field audits on behalf of the State of Indiana for a wide range of taxpayers. This role involves analyzing business books and records to ensure compliance with Indiana tax laws. The position emphasizes customer focus and a commitment to taxpayers through continuous, innovative methods to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and productivity in tax administration.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards and procedures.
  • General knowledge of statutes, regulations and case law pertinent to tax compliance.
  • Ability to generate data requests and to extract, evaluate and use information from a variety of business records.
  • Ability to effectively interview and solicit pertinent information from taxpayers and their representatives, some of whom may be uncooperative or hostile.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, taxpayers, their representatives, and others involved in the audit process.
  • Ability to travel overnight in the performance of assigned audits.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 15 hours of accounting coursework.
  • At least 7 years tax auditing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field audits on behalf of the State of Indiana on a vast array of taxpayers.
  • Analyze the books and records of businesses to ensure compliance with Indiana tax laws.
  • Ensure the highest level of customer focus and a strong commitment to the taxpayers of Indiana.
  • Utilize continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency, and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.
  • Travel overnight in the performance of assigned audits.
  • May be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
