About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently seeking a Revenue Tax Auditor I to work in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, as well as some motor vehicle laws. The Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division administers and enforces both motor fuels tax laws and motor carrier tax laws. They also conduct audits for International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA). This position is assigned specifically as the Joint Operation Center (JOC) auditor. The JOC auditor will conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that are not in voluntary compliance and have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems of a more unique nature, or of unusual difficulty or complexity. This is a time-limited position. It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits for a limited time, not to exceed 3 years (36 months). Selected candidate may be considered for other permanent positions, once the time-limited position is completed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Transcript (official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required twelve accounting hours.
  • Knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of a variety of accounting systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax
  • Must have filed and paid all North Carolina State taxes owed each year leading up to the current calendar year or currently in a non-delinquent payment status with the State of North Carolina on taxes that are currently owed to the state.
