About The Position

The Comptroller of Maryland, Revenue Administration Division is seeking to hire a Revenue Examiner I for its processing sections. A Revenue Examiner I is the entry-level position for work in tax assessments, collections, investigations, and examinations. This role involves performing duties independently, as part of a team, or providing professional taxpayer service assistance within one or more specialized fields of revenue production administered by the Comptroller of Maryland. These fields may include sales and use tax, admissions and amusement tax, income tax, withholding tax, motor vehicle fuel tax, alcohol and tobacco tax, and other revenue levies. Some positions require rotation through various work sections, and other job duties may apply. On-the-job training and resources will be provided. Please note that some Revenue Examiner I positions may require working evenings and/or Saturdays during Tax Season (January 15th to May 15th). All Comptroller employees are prohibited from preparing tax returns for other taxpayers, performing bookkeeping for private clients that could be used for tax return preparation, or working for private tax return companies, even on their own time.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Two years of experience involving one or more of the following areas: customer service, telecommunications, fiscal clerical or clerical related work.
  • Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for one year of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in accounting and budget classification or accounting and budget specialty codes in the financial clerical and technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Must be willing to work according to the conditions noted in the job description.
  • Must successfully undergo fingerprinting and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States upon appointment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preparing federal and/or state tax returns.
  • Experience working in a call center.
  • Additional customer service experience.
  • Personal Computer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties independently, as a member of an examination or collection team, or provide professional taxpayer service assistance.
  • Work within one or more of the specialized fields of revenue production administered by the Comptroller of Maryland, which may include sales and use tax, admissions and amusement tax, income tax, withholding tax, motor vehicle fuel tax, alcohol and tobacco tax, and any other revenue levy authorized by the legislature.
  • Rotate throughout various work sections as required by some Revenue Examiner I positions.
  • Potentially work evenings and/or Saturdays during Tax Season (January 15th to May 15th).
