About The Position

The Revenue Cycle Collection Specialist is responsible for managing and resolving patient financial responsibility, with a primary focus on collecting outstanding balances and reducing accounts receivable (A/R). This role works within athenaOne to manage worklists, perform account follow-up, and ensure timely and accurate payment resolution while supporting a positive patient experience.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of healthcare collections, billing, or accounts receivable experience
  • Experience with athenaOne or similar system
  • Strong understanding of patient responsibility, insurance adjudication, and A/R workflows
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities

  • Manage and collect outstanding patient balances through phone, portal, and written communication
  • Educate patients on balances, insurance responsibility, and payment options
  • Establish and monitor payment plans
  • Work A/R aging reports with emphasis on patient-responsibility balances
  • Research and resolve denials, underpayments, and billing discrepancies
  • Manage assigned Athena worklists, including Self-Pay, Collections, Refunds, Unapplied Credits, Credit Card errors; return mail/email and patient correspondent
  • Process patient refunds and resolve credit balances
  • Coordinate with external collections agencies, including account placement, recalls, and reconciliation
  • Manage DPC accounts, including membership billing and follow-up on delinquent accounts
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with HIPAA and applicable collection regulations
