About The Position

Traffic Enforcement Constables are responsible for enforcing traffic laws under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes, and municipal bylaws to enhance road safety. Members assigned to Traffic Enforcement provide specialized enforcement, collision response, traffic control, court prosecution, and public education services, while supporting community-based policing initiatives and road safety strategies.

Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of traffic legislation, including the Criminal Code, provincial statutes, and municipal bylaws pertaining to traffic enforcement and impaired driving investigations
Demonstrated practical and theoretical understanding of motorcycle riding, VIP escorts, crowd management, and public education/enforcement
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with members of the public, colleagues, and partner agencies
Eligible to retire, recently retired, or a serving Canadian police officer within the last three years
Police recruit training provided by any of the following Canadian police training academies: RCMP Training Academy (Depot); Ontario Police College; Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre (Calgary Police Service); Edmonton Police Service, Basic Recruit Training; Lethbridge College; Winnipeg Police Service, Police Recruit Training Academy; Royal Newfoundland Constabulary; Saskatchewan Police College; École Nationale de Police du Québec; Atlantic Police Academy; Canadian Forces Military Police Academy or Justice Institute of British Columbia
Must not be the subject of any current Police Act allegations, Professional Standards investigations, Independent Investigations Office complaints or equivalent disciplinary processes in other provinces
Deployable to work patrol
Pass a medical exam to confirm fit for duty
Possess a valid CPR-C certification
Possess a valid Class 5 & 6 driver’s licence
Able to pass all elements of the on-boarding process, which includes, but not limited to, VPD use-of-force qualifications.
Must be able to pass a “Saddle Height Test Reverse Test” on the motorcycle and upright a downed motorcycle without assistance.

INTOX EC/IR II Operator or Instructor qualification
Alco-Sensor FST Operator or Calibrator qualification
Laser / Radar Operator certification
Successful completion of the VPD Motor Office Course (where applicable)
Annual maintenance of Motor Officer Skills training
Successful completion of the SFST, Alco-Sensor FST, and Laser / Radar Operator courses or provide proof of qualifications

Responsibilities

Enforces traffic laws under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes, and municipal bylaws through proactive and targeted enforcement initiatives
Responds to traffic-related calls for service, including motor vehicle collisions, impaired driving investigations, public complaints, and roadway hazards
Participate in high-visibility traffic safety campaigns and enforcement strategies in high-collision or targeted areas
Attends court when notified and prosecutes tickets issued under various provincial and federal statutes
Assists patrol members at motor vehicle collisions and major incidents by managing traffic flow and scene safety
Provides traffic control at major incidents, emergency scenes, demonstrations, parades, and special events
Delivers public education related to traffic safety, crime prevention, and community safety during routine contacts and in formal presentations
Provides education, and operational guidance to VPD members related to provincial statues, traffic enforcement, and traffic court processes
Participates in problem-oriented and community-based policing initiatives by identifying traffic-related quality-of-life issues and supporting long-term solutions
Maintains accurate documentation, reports, and records related to enforcement activities
