About The Position

This role supervises and provides peer leadership during food packing shifts at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) and leads retail operations at FMSC’s MarketPlace™ site location. The position involves making operational decisions and acting as the person in charge in the absence of management. A key aspect of this role is facilitating impactful and productive volunteer experiences through hospitality and authentic connections, while also upholding safety policies and procedures.

  • Able to exert yourself physically for a 4-8 hour shift.
  • Able to walk and stand in intervals up to 4 hours.
  • Able to push, pull, lift 30-50 lbs. repeatedly, bend, twist, and use hand tools like utility knives.
  • Have experience or an interest in becoming familiar with retail merchandising.
  • Enthusiastic, assertive, and confident when sharing information with groups and individuals.
  • Focused on hospitality: recognize and meet volunteer needs.
  • Able to build rapport and maintain relationships.
  • Respect and value FMSC’s volunteers and supporters, varying in beliefs, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Able to tolerate consistent exposure to soy (an allergen).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise food packing operations during scheduled shifts, delegating tasks and ensuring operations run according to FMSC policies and procedures from setup to cleanup.
  • Model excellent work performance and encourage high performance from staff, providing on-the-spot coaching to peers, recognizing successes, and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Lead site-level MarketPlace retail operations (Generally 30-35% of the time, with some seasonal variations).
  • Maintain an inviting and appealing sales floor, organizing, tidying, and cleaning products and displays.
  • Set merchandise following planogram and visual merchandising instructions.
  • Restock products and manage inventory, including counting direct ship items and monthly allocation pallets.
  • Perform monthly site inventory.
  • Assist with weekly site deposits.
  • Train peers on point of sale use, customer data collection, new products, and artisan partners, and troubleshoot issues with the POS system.
  • Act as the point of contact between the MarketPlace department and site staff, sending communications and updates, and sharing monthly KPIs at site staff meetings.
  • Stock mobile event display units with retail supplies and merchandise, and receive and inventory display units after mobile events (at some locations).
  • Serve as the primary authority on food quality and safety issues, compliance, questions, and emergencies in the absence of management, completing PIC training, CPR, and first aid training.
  • Assist with audits from the FDA or other regulatory authorities as needed.
  • Create an impactful and dynamic volunteer experience by telling volunteers about the mission, inviting them to volunteer again, providing exceptional hospitality, greeting volunteers warmly, answering questions, thanking them authentically, and expressing the importance of their contribution.
  • Give large group presentations that include food impact stories and information about FMSC.
  • Ask volunteers to donate and share how they can invest in feeding kids with their time, finances, and prayers.
  • Orchestrate packing sessions, anticipating needs, thinking ahead, troubleshooting problems, and being flexible with the unpredictability of a volunteer workforce.
  • Clean, track production, direct volunteers, palletize boxes, and move pallets using a pallet jack.
  • Lead a Christian prayer over the packaged food and invite volunteers to join.
  • Maintain a clean and food-safe facility by doing laundry and cleaning floors, dishes, and bathrooms several times per day.
  • Uphold food safety, food quality, volunteer safety, and personnel safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
