The Food Department Manager supports the Food Department across multiple store locations (South Haven, Benton Harbor, Stevensville, and surrounding stores), with time allocated based on business needs, particularly seasonal demands. The Department Manager is responsible for overall team member engagement, including recognition, feedback, coaching, performance management, training, development, and succession planning. They will direct Leads and Team Leaders, and are accountable for area operations and financials such as shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling, staffing, and conflict resolution. The role also involves identifying and implementing process improvements and upholding the Meijer culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4+ years of retail/grocery or customer service experience.
  • Progressive leadership experience preferred.
  • A passion to provide industry leading service.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with team members clearly and precisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial and statistical information and use it for informed decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an organization that practices working safely at all times.

  • A thorough understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising to meet customer needs and gain sales and market share.

Responsibilities

  • Engages with team members to ensure they receive appropriate onboarding, training, development, coaching, and feedback.
  • Identifies talent and engages in career discussions to support store staffing and ensure a diversified talent pipeline for team member and leadership roles.
  • Conducts discussions with team members to ensure Meijer standards are upheld and team members have opportunities for growth.
  • Oversees the execution of corporate plans to ensure services and products are effectively managed, maximizing sales and productivity, and owning budget line items in the P&L.
  • Drives safety and compliance throughout the store, manages overall condition, and follows all compliance procedures.
  • Ensures Team Leaders and Leads provide guidance, assign daily work, and address training needs.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or required.
