About The Position

The Business of Fashion is seeking a correspondent to expand its coverage of the retail sector, focusing on M&A, earnings, and trends driving store success. The ideal candidate will possess strong sourcing, reporting, and writing skills to break news, analyze developments, and provide data-driven insights. Based in New York with travel opportunities, the correspondent will report to BoF’s US editor. The Business of Fashion is a globally recognized source for authoritative and analytical perspectives on the fashion and beauty industries, aiming to inform and connect these sectors. Serving members in over 125 countries, BoF offers independent journalism, business advice, online learning, career tools, and events. With a team of over 100 professionals across London, New York, Paris, and Milan, BoF is a leading source of business intelligence and an influential voice in the fashion industry.

Requirements

  • Strong sourcing, reporting, and writing skills
  • Ability to break news, analyze developments, and create differentiating, data-driven insights
  • Deep knowledge of the fashion industry, including luxury houses, emerging designers, mass-market brands, retail real estate, new commerce channels, and supply chain technologies
  • Ability to react to news quickly, both in writing short news hits and second-day analysis
  • Understanding and ability to synthesize earnings reports, S1s, income statements, etc.
  • Existing list of contacts and sources in the retail space
  • Capability of breaking news
  • Works hard, is excited to tell stories, and has a can-do attitude

Nice To Haves

  • Instinct for which retailers and retail leaders are pushing the industry forward
  • Ability to unpack the latest developments in retail (e.g., Reformation’s IPO, Saks’ bankruptcy, Victoria’s Secret’s turnaround)
  • Ability to identify consumer trends and analyze them from a business perspective (e.g., brands launching handbags, the explosion of neighborhood retail)

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and deliver at least 1 freshly reported feature on your beat per week
  • Regularly write brief news stories that are important for BoF readers
  • Quickly develop vital news stories into analysis and trend pieces
  • Use your source network and industry expertise to break news and elevate features
  • Develop relationships with top-level executives in fashion and retail
  • Contribute to BoF’s longer form content, including case studies
  • Collaborate on stories and projects with reporters and editors on adjacent beats, including luxury, tech and marketing based in our newsroom hubs in London and New York
