About The Position

Make the Road New York (MRNY) is seeking a full-time Restorative Justice Coordinator to join their School Based Team at Bushwick Campus Community School. This role will support and implement restorative justice practices within four high schools. A community school is defined as a hub of resources, programs, and services that cater to the needs and strengths of the entire student, family, and community. It fosters a culture of community where trust and accountability among all stakeholders are nurtured and strengthened. Restorative Justice is a key component of the community school strategy, aiming to build and strengthen relationships and assist all school stakeholders in responding to conflict and harm in a manner that promotes social-emotional growth. The position requires a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends. MRNY is a newly unionized workplace, and this is a bargaining unit position.

Requirements

Eligible to work in the U.S.
Experience utilizing restorative justice practices, including restorative circles and conferences, for community building, accountability, responding to harm and conflict, and for re-integration.
Experience working in school-based settings, with knowledge of youth development theories.
Expertise in skills and knowledge of restorative practices and restorative justice, encompassing philosophy, principles, models, interventions, forms, and techniques, with a specific focus on communities of color.
Commitment to social and racial justice and knowledge of community organizations.
Strong outreach, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
Strong ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including youth, educators, families, and communities from various cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with school administration, youth, and MRNY staff to establish and maintain a vision for a restorative school climate and culture at Bushwick Campus.
Partner with the Community School Director and the Campus Restorative Justice Action team to develop campus-wide and individual school plans for supporting and sustaining the implementation of restorative approaches.
Facilitate ongoing restorative justice trainings for key school stakeholders, including youth, staff, and families.
Conduct an annual school climate needs assessment to understand the needs of students, families, administrators, and the school community, which will continuously inform the school vision.
Support the development of a cohort of RJ Youth Leaders to implement RJ practices within the school.
Lead an action team comprised of school stakeholders, youth, parents, and/or school staff responsible for implementing and sustaining the restorative justice implementation plan.
Coordinate and collaborate with the Community School team to implement community-building circles, community events, and workshops on restorative justice approaches with students and parents.
Serve as the primary contact for out-of-classroom interventions, such as restorative conversations/mediations, circles, and reintegration meetings, and assist teachers in facilitating in-classroom interventions like talking circles, connection circles, and community builders.
Track and report data on all student interventions.
Participate in monthly community school team meetings.
Ensure restorative justice practices are integrated with a racial justice lens.
Undertake special projects as assigned.
