About The Position

The Natural Areas & Trails (NAT) division, within the City’s Culture, Parks and Recreation Department, manages over 2,000 acres of natural areas and the city’s 40-mile trail system including eleven miles of the regional Poudre River Trail. This growing program is seeking a passionate, creative, and motivated professional to join the team as a Seasonal Restoration Technician to support NAT’s vision of a community connected to nature. This position reports to the Natural Area and Trails Crew Supervisor and works under the direction of the Restoration Specialist to perform natural resource management and maintenance operations that restore and maintain the ecological health of the City’s natural areas. The position also supports the implementation of plans relating to all aspects of effective resource management and enhancement of Natural Area properties. The successful applicant will be provided with all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) required for safe pesticide application and will be required to complete training provided by the City of Greeley before applying any chemicals without supervision.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have two (2) years of a good driving record.
  • OR any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job, AND possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate pickup trucks and be trained to tow trailers.
  • Knowledge of native and noxious plant species in Colorado.
  • Ability to work as a team member as well as independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety rules and identify and report unsafe conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Intermediate knowledge (1–3 years) of introduced and noxious plant management practices.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience applying herbicides; must be able to obtain a commercial applicator’s license if applicant does not currently possess one (City can provide).
  • Proficient in field data collection software (e.g., Survey123, Field Maps, GIS, Workforce, etc.).
  • Coursework in Natural Resource Management, Restoration Ecology, Rangeland Management, Botany, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as ATVs, tractors, mowing equipment, string trimmers, chainsaws, and related tools.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to effectively control invasive weed species using chemical, mechanical, cultural, and biological controls.
  • Assist in proper loading and mixing of chemicals into equipment.
  • Apply chemicals in an accurate and safe manner using ATVs, truck-mounted boom sprayers, backpack sprayers, and hand sprayers.
  • Maintain and utilize City-provided PPE when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting.
  • Assist in seeding and planting projects including site and soil preparation.
  • Complete vegetation mapping, surveys, and site assessments using field data collection software and following NAT Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Provide support to other staff during peak times and assist with larger projects (e.g., volunteer/service projects and capital improvement projects).
  • Occasionally perform routine natural area maintenance duties including emptying trash containers, picking up litter, cleaning restrooms, repairing vandalism, light construction projects, and serving as a member of the snow removal team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
