About The Position

The respiratory therapy extern will work under the direct and under general supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist and will help to stabilize, prevent, or remedy patient respiratory problems in all patient care areas. In addition to supervised patient care, the RT extern will assume responsibility for the maintenance of a variety of respiratory therapy equipment and assist RT staff with departmental processes as needed.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in a respiratory therapy program and completion of at least one year of study.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification for healthcare providers
• Analytical as well as interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Highly motivated to learn clinical skills and display initiative

Responsibilities

• Assists in the care of patients with respiratory problems in all areas of the hospital under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist.
• Develops critical thinking skills.
• Gains awareness of the role of the respiratory therapist in a hospital setting.
• Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of respiratory therapy equipment.
• Assists respiratory therapy staff with departmental processes.
• Takes responsibility for own professional growth and development.
