The Respiratory Therapist (RT) will utilize respiratory therapy processes to support patient assessment, including pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph interpretation, hemodynamic values, and laboratory values. They will correlate blood gases and electrolytes, and identify and address the special needs of patient populations specific to department services. The RT will operate specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings, assist physicians with bedside procedures, and provide medication treatments and therapies per physician order or patient-driven respiratory protocols. Responsibilities also include cleaning, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment, educating patients on therapy, self-care, and disease management, and collaborating with other departments for patient education. The RT must adapt to policies and procedures, perform required tasks, and maintain performance standards. They will demonstrate effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills, provide clear and timely patient handoffs, and promote a culture of safety by applying proper safety measures and reporting patient safety events. Additionally, the RT will teach, educate, and precept new teammates, orientees, and students, demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served and understanding principles of growth and development.
