About The Position

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing respiratory care therapies, procedures, and laboratory support to patients of all age groups across the hospital. This role delivers safe and effective patient care in accordance with physician orders and protocols, ensures proper use and maintenance of respiratory equipment, performs lab-related tasks such as analyzer quality checks and calibrations, and collaborates with the healthcare team to achieve optimal outcomes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an A.M.A approved associate’s degree certification/registry program OR; Graduate of an A.M.A. approved bachelor’s degree program in respiratory care
  • Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the State of Texas; License must remain active and unencumbered while employed
  • One (1) year of clinical experience in both critical and non-critical care areas
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified
  • Knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy, physiology, disease states, infection control, pharmacology, and respiratory care modalities.
  • Proficiency with respiratory therapy equipment and special procedures, validated through competency demonstrations.
  • Knowledge of pulmonary function testing and rehabilitation principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in patient care and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills for patient and team interactions.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to maintain organized systems and records that support efficient patient flow.

Responsibilities

  • Provides respiratory care treatments and procedures per physician orders, policies, and guidelines.
  • Accurately documents patient assessments, treatments, and outcomes in the medical record.
  • Reviews physician orders, initiates respiratory protocols, and participates in rounds to support the patient care plan.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other team members to coordinate care.
  • Educates patients and families on respiratory therapies, equipment, and self-care techniques.
  • Cleans, maintains, and performs minor adjustments on respiratory and laboratory equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Performs laboratory testing for inpatient, outpatient, and acute care patients, including quality checks, calibrations, and routine maintenance of analyzers.
  • Verifies lab orders and results, requesting re-draws for inappropriate or incorrect specimens.
  • Assists in orienting new staff and provides ongoing training on therapies, procedures, and modalities.
  • Supports inventory management, notifying staff when supplies need replenishment.
  • Promotes patient safety through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention of medical errors.
  • Communicates with management regarding problems, concerns, training needs, and attends assigned meetings.
  • Performs other related tasks as needed.
