As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, you will deliver therapeutic, diagnostic, and life-support respiratory care procedures in general and intensive patient care areas, or home care environments. The role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages, as appropriate to the service area. This includes completing and documenting age-specific ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care, collaborating with the healthcare team, patient, and family to implement and evaluate the interdisciplinary plan, and revising it based on patient status changes. The position requires accurate administration and documentation of treatments and medications for patients of all ages, identifying and addressing patient/family educational needs, and actively participating in performance improvement programs. It also involves assuring personal and professional development through educational activities and competency validation, demonstrating patient advocacy, and applying knowledge of growth and development to patient care. The therapist will determine and perform within clinical, leadership and/or education pathways to support evidenced-based, quality patient care and performance improvement, exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances, and plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turn around time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes. The role functions as a role model for clinical practice, manages resources, establishes priorities, modifies the environment to meet patient care needs, completes predetermined projects, uses problem-solving methods, and actively participates in the orientation and feedback for new employees. Additionally, the therapist contributes to practice, environment, and work issues by participating in unit, hospital, and/or organization activities and assists with educational activities for the respiratory care department, other hospital departments, and the community.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and/or certification from a CoARC (Committee on Accreditation of Respiratory Care Education) approved school of respiratory therapy.
  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner by the VA State Board of Medicine.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position.
  • Be able to acquire BLS within 3 months of employment in this position or as determined by department.
  • Some areas may require ACLS, NRP, PALS certification within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver the best therapeutic, diagnostic, and life-support respiratory care procedures in general and intensive patient care areas, or home care environments.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Complete, document, and use age specific ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Revise plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages.
  • Identify patient/family (caregiver) educational needs in a timely manner, incorporate them into the plan of care, implement and document appropriately.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement program by obtaining desired outcomes.
  • Assure personal and professional development through participation in educational activities and completion of annual competency validation.
  • Consistently demonstrate the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determine and perform within clinical, leadership and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turn around time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Function as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.
  • Use problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
  • Take an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provide input into practice, environment and work issues by participating on unit, hospital and/or organization activities which facilitate staff participation/input in decision making.
  • Assist with providing educational activities for the respiratory care department, other hospital departments and the community.
