About The Position

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician’s orders, department policies and procedures. Experience with ABG machines, Ventilators, Bipap/CPAP, and EKGs. Administer Nebulizer treatments, Incentive Spirometry, MDIs, Ezpap and Oxygen. Perform chest physiotherapy as indicated.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy with one year of acute care experience preferred.
  • Current State Respiratory Therapist Licensure (RT)
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs various methods of oxygen delivery utilizing appropriate equipment.
  • Assesses the need and effects of oxygen delivery.
  • Administers Respiratory therapy treatments by assessing patient, determining appropriateness of order, and implementing physician order.
  • Sets up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment.
  • Assesses patient pain to determine if physician or nurse intervention is necessary for positive patient outcome.
  • Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis and addresses complications and contraindications associated with the procedure.
  • Documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service. Documents patient refusal, inability to administer, or missed therapy with appropriate reasoning. Communicates info with Nursing staff for consistent patient care.
  • Follows departmental equipment cleaning and/or sterilization procedures.
  • Performs all duties as outlined in the Shift Responsibilities.
  • Performs EKG's, documents patient abnormalities, sends reports to physicians and files reports in department, according to department procedures.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests Respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on identified needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning, includes patient family as appropriate.
  • Follows physician orders both written and verbal. Writes verbal order from physician and notes RT name and Physician name. Calls physician for clarification of orders as needed.
  • Complete all other tasks assigned by Nurse Manger or Director.
