About The Position

This role involves providing comprehensive respiratory care to patients, including identifying and managing cardiopulmonary dysfunction, initiating and managing ventilatory support, and performing various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The Respiratory Therapist will work collaboratively with healthcare teams, administer medications and gases, maintain artificial airways, and ensure accurate documentation and billing. The position also includes patient transport monitoring, assisting with procedures, and participating in multidisciplinary rounds. Additionally, the role involves precepting new staff and students, maintaining equipment, and engaging in continuous professional development.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
  • Massachusetts state licensure in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Copy of highest-level degree and/or transcript in a clinical field or specialty. If no degree, a copy of high school diploma.

Nice To Haves

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within 6 months of hire and maintain certification bi-annually.
  • Minimum one year of critical care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies acute and chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
  • Initiates and provides ventilatory support, including recommending ventilator settings, using lung protective strategies, weaning patients, and monitoring/troubleshooting ventilators.
  • Uses best practice and follows approved Therapist driven protocols, procedures, and department policies.
  • Performs diagnostic procedures such as ABG draws and sputum specimen collection.
  • Analyzes and interprets ABG samples.
  • Troubleshoots Blood Gas machines and performs quality control procedures.
  • Performs bedside spirometry.
  • Performs capnography.
  • Monitors patient’s respiratory condition during transport within the hospital and to other facilities.
  • Attends Codes and Rapid Response Team (RRT) events.
  • Assists with conscious sedations and intubations.
  • Administers therapeutic gases such as oxygen, Heliox, and high flow oxygen therapy.
  • Assists with Bronchoscopies.
  • Assists in all treatment modalities for the neonatal and pediatric population.
  • Assesses tracheostomy and laryngectomy tubes.
  • Maintains the artificial airway and performs naso-tracheal, endotracheal, and tracheostomy suctioning.
  • Assists providers with tracheostomy tube changes.
  • Documents correct brand, size, cuffed or uncuffed, and disposable or reusable inner cannulas on the EMR avatar.
  • Works in conjunction with nursing staff to provide trach care and tracheal suction.
  • Assesses for and administers PEP, CPT, and all other airway clearance devices/methods.
  • Administers aerosolized/metered dose medications.
  • Assesses for, administers, troubleshoots, and maintains non-invasive ventilation.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds to offer clinical expertise.
  • Provides accurate and complete documentation and charging in the EMR.
  • Performs charge reconciliation on all patients daily to ensure correct billing.
  • Interacts with Providers and other staff in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Responds to requests in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent bedside manner.
  • Precepts/trains/orients other departments, students, and Respiratory staff as required.
  • Maintains equipment, supplies, and stock.
  • Attends seminars and educational programs to enhance professional growth and meet patient needs.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties as requested/assigned.
