About The Position

The Student Respiratory position provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services for adult patients within the scope of the employee’s Student Permit to Practice Respiratory Care. This developmental position is intended to help incumbents gain the expertise and skills needed to successfully complete their education requirements. The role includes assessing patients, conducting diagnostic tests, performing routine physician-prescribed therapies, maintaining equipment, and educating patients and caregivers about respiratory conditions and disease management. The position is based at Franciscan Health Michigan City Campus in Michigan City, Indiana, and travel is never or rarely required.

Requirements

Be enrolled in an accredited respiratory program.
High school diploma or GED.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
Student Permit to Practice Respiratory Care from the State Licensing Board.

Responsibilities

Perform thorough patient assessments within the guidelines of the student respiratory permit, obtain patient histories, and elicit descriptions of sleep problems to support diagnosis and treatment.
Conduct testing techniques within the guidelines of the student respiratory permit to assist physicians with cardiac or pulmonary research or diagnosis of disorders.
Perform routine physician-prescribed therapeutic modalities, such as oxygen devices and treatments, within the guidelines of the student respiratory permit.
Maintain cleanliness of patient rooms and equipment, and prepare and calibrate equipment needed for testing.
Educate patients and caregivers about conditions and disease management techniques, including breathing exercises and use of medications or respiratory equipment.
