About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to join their Critical Care Transport Team, specializing in neonatal and pediatric patients. This role involves providing critical care during ambulance and fixed-wing transports, assessing patients, and utilizing established protocols to manage their medical conditions. The therapist will critically think and adapt to the dynamic transport environment, managing respiratory needs through airway management, medications, NIV, and invasive ventilation. After orientation, the position will be based at the Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Team’s Clarksville Base. The Critical Care Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is a specialized, CAMTS-accredited team dedicated to providing the highest level of care in ground and fixed-wing transport to critically ill patients requiring the hospital's resources. The team comprises highly trained respiratory therapists, registered nurses, and AEMTs who collaborate to provide comprehensive patient care. This role offers the chance to enhance clinical skills and significantly improve patient outcomes during critical moments. Team members practice at the highest level of their scope and cross-train into the nursing role. Requirements

  • LIC-Registered Respiratory Therapist - Tennessee
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • 1 year experience
  • Graduate of an approved discipline specific program
  • Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate ventilator management in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate respiratory therapeutic procedures in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Demonstrates sufficient knowledge of the primary laboratory tests required by the department to successfully meet work objectives. Understands the core functions and features of the core laboratory tests. Able to interpret results of the test under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients to identify clinical needs.
  • Initiates and manages per protocol during ground transport: Mechanical Ventilation NIV, including HFNC and Bubble CPAP Nitric Oxide High Frequency Ventilation Respiratory Medications
  • Trouble shoot transport equipment
  • Work the Registered Nurse and EMT on transport to provide patient care.
  • Performs Arterial punctures.
  • Performs Intubations
  • Maintain competencies required by institution, department, and CAMTs.
  • Performs lab tests for blood gases and glucose checks per POCT guidelines and interpret results.
  • Collaborate with receiving units at MCJCHV and referring facilities to coordinate patient transport.
  • Knowledgeable in nursing role and able to perform those duties within scope of practice to patients during transport.
