The Respiratory Therapist utilizes respiratory therapy processes to support patient assessment, employing skills such as pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph interpretation, hemodynamic value analysis, and correlation of blood gases and electrolytes. This role identifies and addresses the special needs of patient populations specific to department services. The therapist operates specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings, assists physicians with bedside procedures, and provides medication treatments and therapies per physician order or patient-driven respiratory protocols. Responsibilities include cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring the proper functionality of equipment, troubleshooting as necessary, and educating patients on therapy goals and disease management. The role also involves facilitating clinical problem-solving, collaborating with other departments, adapting to policies and procedures across various service areas, and maintaining performance standards. Effective communication, feedback, conflict resolution, and timely patient handoffs are crucial. Promoting a culture of safety by applying proper safety measures, reporting patient safety events, and assisting in corrective actions is also a key aspect. Additionally, the therapist will teach, educate, and precept new teammates, orientees, and students, demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of patients served and understanding principles of growth and development.
