About The Position

This position sets up, operates, and administers all types of respiratory care equipment and procedures to be used in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease and illness to both general floor and critical care areas. Evaluates therapeutic objectives and outcomes and transcribes verbal orders from physicians in the medical record. Performs arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, co-oximetry, electrocardiograms, electrolytes, and other basic pulmonary function testing. Requirements

  • Associates of a 2 year AMA approved Respiratory Care program.
  • Over 10 months experience as Respiratory Therapist.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) - Certification
  • Basic Life Support BLS Certification
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - License Licensed
  • Respiratory Therapist - Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - License Registered Respiratory Therapist

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors of a 4 year Bachelor level or AMA approved Respiratory Care program.
  • 1 year clinical experience.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or -campus specific
  • Credential from National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Responsibilities

  • Sets up, operates, and monitors mechanical ventilators as ordered and makes appropriate changes.
  • Assures the patency, stability, and location of the artificial airway and adequate humidification.
  • Performs routine respiratory care treatments and oxygen administration in adult, pediatric, and neonatal areas, including aerosol therapy, nebulized medications, metered dose inhalers, flutter therapy, PEP therapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning, breathing exercises, CPAP/BiPAP therapy, sputum induction, and oxygen analysis.
  • Describes and instructs therapies or procedures to patients and/or families.
  • Reviews, prioritizes, and readjusts daily assignments for efficient and organized therapy delivery.
  • Performs arterial punctures and a variety of blood tests including arterial blood gas analysis, co-oximetry, and electrolytes.
  • Performs quality control and proficiency testing on analyzers and verifies/documents results.
  • Gathers materials and equipment for therapy and transports them to patient’s bedside.
  • Examines patient charts for appropriate orders and verifies patient identity.
  • Mixes, measures, and dispenses pharmacological solutions and drugs as prescribed.
  • Documents all mechanical ventilator parameters, changes, respiratory treatments, tests, and patient responses in the medical record.
  • Documents and reports delays or omissions in care.
  • Reviews physician prescriptions for completeness.
  • Assesses neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients to establish appropriate respiratory care.
  • Assists the physician in bedside procedures as required.
  • Takes and transcribes physician's verbal orders.
  • Performs bag and mask ventilation, maintains adequate airway, and assists with life-threatening events.
  • Attends all resuscitations and traumas as assigned.
  • Performs basic pulmonary function testing, including vital capacity, forced inspiratory/expiratory flows, flow volume loops, and peak flow maneuvers.
  • Performs resting and exercise oximetry testing.
  • Collects soiled equipment, transports it for cleaning, and cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, and packages respiratory care equipment.
  • Performs minor troubleshooting of equipment and recognizes when equipment needs repair or preventative maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
