The Respiratory Therapist (RT) will utilize respiratory therapy processes to support patient assessment, including pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph interpretation, hemodynamic values, and laboratory values, correlating blood gases and electrolytes. This role identifies and addresses the special needs of patient populations specific to department services. The RT operates specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings, assists physicians with bedside procedures, and provides medication treatments and therapies per physician order or patient-driven respiratory protocols. Responsibilities include cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring the proper functionality of equipment, troubleshooting as necessary, and identifying the need for service or repair. The RT educates and instructs patients on the purpose, technique, self-care, goals of therapy, and disease management. They facilitate clinical problem-solving, collaborate with other departments for patient education, and adapt to policies and procedures across various service areas. Effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills are essential, as is providing clear, concise, timely, and accurate patient handoffs. Promoting a culture of safety by recognizing and applying proper safety measures to prevent patient harm, reporting safety events and near misses, and assisting in corrective actions are key duties. Additionally, the RT will teach, educate, and precept new teammates, orientees, and students, demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served and understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
