About The Position

Under the supervision of the Lead Respiratory Care Practitioner, the Respiratory Care Practitioner will provide a range of respiratory services including emergency care, routine care, administration of various therapies and medications, mechanical ventilation management, tracheostomy care, resident/family education, and maintenance of respiratory equipment. The role requires prompt resident assessment and intervention during emergencies, and adherence to department policies and procedures for all ordered treatments.

Requirements

  • Graduate of approved AMA School of Respiratory Care.
  • Current State RCP license.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support.
  • Must be able to relate to the care for the age specific population of geriatric residents.
  • Must be able to work with and communicate well with the other healthcare providers in the unit.
  • Must be able to organize their work assignment and adjust as needed to optimize the delivery of effective quality care to the resident.

Responsibilities

  • Respond immediately to all emergency calls within the subacute unit for prompt resident assessment and resuscitative care, as well as appropriate respiratory interventions.
  • Administer oxygen therapy via devices and techniques described in the department Policy & Procedure manual as ordered by the physician.
  • Administer respiratory medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Administer medical gas mixtures by techniques listed and ordered by the physician.
  • Assess and administer humidification and aerosol therapy as appropriate to the resident condition.
  • Set-up and maintain mechanical ventilation as ordered by the physician.
  • Perform ventilator weaning and discontinuance as ordered by the physician.
  • Conduct ventilator and tracheostomy weaning assessments per department Policy & Procedure.
  • Provide tracheostomy care.
  • Perform tracheostomy tube changes per physician orders.
  • Perform airway management, suctioning, and tracheostomy tube cuff pressure measurement, per department Policy & Procedure.
  • Educate and train residents/families for discharge to home.
  • Maintain bedside respiratory equipment in clean and safe condition.
  • Perform CPT, as well as other respiratory therapy treatments and procedures as ordered by the physician per department Policy & Procedure.
  • Perform pulse oximetry, and other respiratory diagnostic procedures per department Policy & Procedure.
  • Perform procedures upon written orders from physicians, notifying the RCP on duty and contacting the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor if unable to perform the procedure.
