About The Position

The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor serves as a supervisor (team leader) for assigned areas and as a respiratory care resource for staff and students. This position provides safe and effective respiratory care as an advanced Respiratory Therapist for assigned patient population in accordance with discipline training, Clinical Practice Guidelines, and hospital standards and protocols. The role involves independent actions such as adjusting non-ordered ventilator parameters, suctioning patients, consulting with physicians and nurses, modifying staff assignments, calling in additional staff when appropriate, and maintaining work areas. The supervisor also oversees assigned respiratory staff, conducts performance evaluations, schedules employees, approves time off, and approves equipment rentals. Weekend coverage and shift rotations may be required.

Requirements

  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist required.
  • Current registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required.
  • Current CPR certification as required by practice setting.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ work experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Must be in a critical care setting if assigned to the Medical Campus.
  • Education, training and/or experience that has satisfied the eligibility requirements of the National Board for Respiratory Care (or its predecessor organization).

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years’ work experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a supervisor (team leader) for assigned areas.

  • Adjust non-ordered ventilator parameters, i.e. peak flow, flow trajectory.
  • Suction patients as required.
  • Select appropriate ventilators for patients.
  • Consult with physicians and nurses regarding the appropriateness of the patient care plan.
  • Modify staff assignments.
  • Call-in additional staff, when appropriate.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and well stocked manner.
  • Supervise assigned respiratory staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations.
  • Schedule employees.
  • Approve time off.
  • Approve equipment rentals.
