About The Position

The George Washington University Hospital Respiratory Care Department provides cutting-edge clinical care to various critically ill patients. The department engages in diverse education pathways, including clinical rotations for local and international respiratory therapy schools, annual respiratory education for nursing and physicians, and departmental continuing education lectures. The department also offers professional development opportunities, teamwork, interdisciplinary care, and advances in academic medicine. The hospital has various units including Cardiovascular Surgical Unit, Level III NICU, two medical ICUs, Trauma/Neuro ICU, Pulmonary Care Unit (4 beds), and general floors.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 0 to 1 year full time experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting
  • Graduation from an approved two-year respiratory therapist program
  • Licensed by the District of Columbia Health Regulation
  • Licensed as an RRT Registered Respiratory Therapist and certified by NBRC.
  • Licensed as a CRT Certified Respiratory Therapist or RRT (to become registered within a year)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist and approved by NBRC
  • BLS Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals required
  • ACLS and PALS within six months of hire
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Strong organizational and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to identify and competently address needs of population served

Responsibilities

  • Ventilator management including the utilization of an ARDS protocol
  • Advanced vent modes (APRV, ASV, NAVA)
  • Inhaled Nitric Oxide Administration
  • Airway Clearance Therapies (utilizing an Airway Clearance Protocol)
  • Airway Management
  • Non-Invasive Ventilation
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Emergency Response Teams
  • Emergency Department Care
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Post-Surgical Ventilator Weaning and Care including open heart surgery, Liver transplant
  • Indirect Calorimetry
  • Bedside PFTs
  • Inpatient Sleep studies
  • Point of Care testing
  • ICU Mobilization
  • Multidisciplinary approach to tracheostomy management and speaking valves
  • Fulfills the needs of the patients, families and community by performing a variety of routine and intensive therapy, diagnostic procedures and patient assessments in accordance with his/her licensure, certification, training, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and stocks respiratory equipment. Ensures ventilator and life support equipment are operable.
