We examine and treat patients with breathing-related conditions, perform diagnostic testing, and collaborate with physicians to develop and implement treatment plans. We also provide patient education on therapies and medication use; perform physiotherapy and related treatments.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a School of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license in PA state of practice or temporary license.
  • Must attain Certified Respiratory Therapist credential 6 months within date of hire.
  • Current BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform respiratory therapy procedures in accordance with physician order and Respiratory Care Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Set-Up, Maintains, & Monitors all forms of oxygen delivery devices and systems.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patients for the appropriateness of respiratory therapy.
  • Determines effectiveness of Therapies ordered and consults physicians for clarification.
  • Collaborates with physicians and Nurse Manager on pulmonary management of the patient to assure appropriate treatment modalities; provides input in the development of policies, procedures, trial of equipment.
  • Acts as a resource to nursing staff, physicians, residents and students regarding respiratory care, safe, effective methods of administering therapy, technical aspects of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Evaluates patients on therapy/protocols and revises plan of care according to assessment findings; is knowledgeable of indications, contraindications and hazards of special procedures.
  • Initiates/maintains non-invasive ventilation and assesses how the patient responds to ventilator therapy, recommends intervention as needed.
  • Participates in Intensive, Critical, Trauma and Medical Floor Rounds to provide status and input regarding management of the patient.
  • As part of the Rapid Response Team, it responds to all Rapid Response Alerts.
  • Provides education to Patient Care Units.
  • Performs emergent airway care and adheres to established procedures when performing care.
  • Assists physicians with diagnostic procedures as needed.
  • Performs arterial blood gas puncture; A-Line draws.
  • Utilizes aseptic technique in patient care and performance of procedures and treatment; adheres to all infection control practices and procedures; maintains effective and efficient use of chemicals/other materials.
  • Cleans and assembles equipment; maintains equipment utilizing manufacturer’s instructions/guidelines; understands equipment applications for therapies; follow safety procedures/guidelines and report unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient/employee information.
  • Maintain competency; attends/adheres to department/unit specific programs and required education.
  • Adheres to time scheduling exhibiting flexibility.
  • Restock supplies, checks for expiration dates and informs Clinical Coordinator / Manager of impending out of stock supplies.
  • Provides performance improvement interventions for respiratory applications.
  • Performs routine statistical collection; provides follow-up data of units; completes patient charges/documentation on patient record.
  • Assuming assignment of staff for shift in absence of Clinical Coordinator.
  • Assumes accountability and responsibility for practice.
  • Responsible for RICN flight and ground transport.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Respiratory Clinical Coordinator, Respiratory Manager and/or Director.
