As a Respiratory Therapist, you'll have the chance to consistently perform at the highest level, incorporating other system assessments into care and reliably demonstrating excellent practice and documentation to department standards with minimal-to-no-variation. These roles are responsible for evaluating, treating, and caring for patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists provide oxygen therapy, manage ventilators, conduct breathing exercises, and monitor lung function to ensure patients receive optimal respiratory care. Individual contributors with responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty. Typically involves diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients, and often include face-to-face interactions with patients. May also spend some time designing and implementing clinical programs, policies, and services using specialized knowledge and skills. Specialty license or certification required which is acquired through advanced education, training and/or experience. This career stream will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory technologist jobs. Requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and require vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision. Problems are typically of a routine nature but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. Communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy educational program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy required within 5 years of hire/transfer for all hires/transfers after 2019.
  • 12 months of acute/critical care Respiratory Therapy clinical experience required.
  • Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential with the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Licensed to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
  • Active NBRC Specialty Credential (e.g., RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS) required within 2 years of hire for Medical Center Respiratory Therapists; ACLS required for TCH Respiratory Therapists within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Manage care and implement treatment plans in collaboration with patients, their families, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate innovative application of technologies that support patient care and stay active with implementation of evidenced-based-practice and new knowledge generated by respiratory research endorsed by our department.
  • Evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders.
