The Respiratory Therapist Registered works under the leadership of the Manager, Sleep/Neuro/PFT and according to established procedures, performing a variety of routine pulmonary functioning tests to provide data used by physicians in diagnosing lung disease and determining the need for surgery. This role involves arranging testing equipment, explaining test procedures to patients, and operating the equipment. The therapist assesses calculations of test results and routes them to physicians for interpretation, and also assists in the maintenance of Respiratory Care equipment. Key duties include conferring with patients to gather pertinent information, explaining test procedures to patients and families, and administering tests according to unit/age specifications while observing patients for distress. The therapist performs various routine pulmonary function tests, including bronco provocation, tidal volume, oxygen-consumption tests, maximum breathing-capacity, and force expiratory vital-capacity tests, and administers medication to aid in the diagnostic process. They are responsible for assessing calculations of test results using established formulas, posting results in patient charts, and routing them to physicians. Regular inspection of pulmonary function testing equipment, following quality control and preventive maintenance plans, is required to ensure proper operation and integrity of test results, including making minor adjustments and notifying the Manager of repair needs. The position also involves miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering telephones, scheduling appointments, filing records, preparing patient charges, and reviewing PFTs. Additionally, the therapist assists the Manager in researching and evaluating new equipment needs for Pulmonary Diagnostics and Respiratory Care.
