About The Position

The scope of work for a respiratory therapist includes assessment, therapeutic intervention and education for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders and/or sleep disorders or associated complications.

Requirements

• A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory care program is required; minimum associate degree or equivalent as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Respiratory Therapists must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care, as well as knowledge of equipment utilized in their department.
• Demonstrates the ability and knowledge required to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering for quality care.
• Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
• Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
• Must have Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
• Must obtain site-specific specialty credential(s) such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), etc.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic pulmonary function testing, including: Spirometry, Diffusion testing, Lung volume testing, Airway resistance testing, Respiratory muscle force measurements, Bronchial provocation testing, Asthma exercise testing, Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing, Cardiopulmonary stress testing, Home oxygen evaluations, Six-minute walk tests, Arterial blood gas (ABG) collection and analysis, Other physician-ordered respiratory diagnostic tests.
• Administer respiratory therapies as prescribed.
• Educate patients on the proper use of respiratory medications and equipment.
• Calibrate, clean, troubleshoot, and maintain pulmonary function testing equipment.
• Identify and report equipment malfunctions to ensure accurate testing and patient safety.
• Provide high-quality patient care while supporting physicians and the healthcare team in diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions.
