Position in this function is under general supervision, position in this function is responsible for performing pulmonary function tests to obtain data on the functioning level of patients' respiratory processes for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating pulmonary disorders.

Requirements

  • High school graduate and either: Completion of 2+ years of clinical experience in the field of pulmonary technology; or Completion of 62 semester hours of college credit (including at least one course in biology, chemistry and mathematics) and a minimum of one year of clinical experience in the field of pulmonary technology; or Completion of a Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) approved program in Respiratory Therapy and a minimum of 6 months of clinical experience in the field of pulmonary technology

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Certified (CPFT) or Registered (RPFT) Pulmonary Function Technologist
  • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification as a Certified (CPFT) or Registered (RPFT) Pulmonary Function Technologist
  • 3+ years of experience in pulmonary function and diagnostic testing (includes operation of equipment, interpretation of results and preparation of report for the provider)

Responsibilities

  • Schedule tests, properly bill procedures, gather pertinent clinical information on patients and perform other clerical duties
  • Administer a variety of pulmonary function tests, including: Spirometry including flow volume loops (pre and post bronchodilator), Maximum voluntary ventilation, Lung volumes (nitrogen washout method), Single breath diffusion (DLCO), Oximetry (rest and exercise)
  • Administer bronchodilator treatments using handheld nebulizer and measured dose inhaler
  • Set-up, calibrate, trouble shoot, sanitize, and perform routine maintenance on the pulmonary function laboratory equipment
  • Evaluate test reliability, patients’ performance, and clinical implications. Enter test data into computer
  • Assure validity of results through the detailed analysis of data in accordance with accepted professional and laboratory standards. Report unusual test results to medical director
  • Produce accurate and timely study reports for physician interpretation
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all studies and related activities
  • Instruct staff on performance of pulmonary function testing
  • Explain procedures to patients and get their cooperation
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies
  • Communicate with technical, medical and interdisciplinary team members in order: to assist with interpretation of studies, discuss follow up plans and facilitate smooth and efficient laboratory operations
